What is Red Tide?
Red tide is a type of harmful algal bloom. These blooms happen when colonies of algae—simple marine plants—multiply uncontrollably, releasing toxins that can harm people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and birds.
Check the Florida Department of Health to find out if a beach you’re considering visiting is affected.
Although swimming in red tide is possible, some individuals may experience skin irritation or burning eyes. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to avoid red tide areas. Should irritation occur, leave the water immediately and rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
