Ding Darling Refuge and a Beach Day: Planning a Full Day on Sanibel

A world-class wildlife refuge and a cabana afternoon in the same day — with one closure that trips everyone up.

Sanibel offers something most beach destinations do not: a world-class wildlife refuge and a proper beach day within the same afternoon. Here is how to plan both without rushing either.

About the refuge

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is one of Sanibel’s signature attractions — a sprawling mangrove and wetland preserve known for birdwatching, alligators, and the scenic Wildlife Drive.

Hours and fees, as of September 2026:

  • Visitor Center: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, free admission, closed Fridays and federal holidays
  • Wildlife Drive: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM daily except Fridays, $10 per vehicle
  • Indigo Trail: $1 per person, closed Fridays
  • Bailey Tract: free, sunrise to sunset daily

The one that catches people out: the refuge is closed every Friday. If a Friday is part of your trip, build around it — there is no way in on that day.

Pairing it with a beach day

The refuge is a morning activity for most visitors: cooler temperatures, more active wildlife, and it leaves the afternoon open. A natural shape for the day:

  • Morning: Wildlife Drive or the Indigo Trail — go early to beat both the heat and the traffic on the drive
  • Afternoon: Lighthouse Beach, Gulfside City Park or Bowman’s Beach for the cabana
  • Evening: wind down at one of the Gulf Drive bars — our Sanibel happy hour guide has the list

Because we handle setup and takedown, you are not racing back from the refuge against a clock on borrowed gear. Your beach spot is standing whenever you get there, and it stays standing until 4:00 PM.

Good to know before you go

  • Closed every Friday — plan around it
  • Wildlife Drive: $10 per vehicle, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
  • Visitor Center free, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Bailey Tract is free if you are short on time or budget

Planning the beach half? Our Sanibel Island guide has parking and access for every beach on the island.
