If you are picking one spot on Sanibel for a cabana day, Lighthouse Beach is hard to beat. It pairs Sanibel’s famous shelling sand with the most recognisable landmark in Southwest Florida.
Why Lighthouse Beach
The historic Sanibel Lighthouse anchors this stretch and gives it a sense of place that a lot of beautiful sand simply does not have. It also sits next to the Lighthouse Cafe, so if the cabana day turns into a full afternoon, food is a walk rather than a drive.
Parking and accessibility
Lighthouse Beach runs $5 per hour metered parking — coin or card at the pay station, or the mobile-pay app posted on the meter — with 4 designated handicap spaces near the boardwalk entrance. There are restrooms and outdoor showers on site, and an ADA-accessible boardwalk that runs straight onto the sand.
If the lot is full, Gulfside City Beach Park is the close alternative — also $5 per hour, with 3 handicap spaces, restrooms and showers. Causeway Islands Park is a free overflow option with restrooms but no shower.
What makes it worth the trip
Sanibel is known island-wide for shelling, and Lighthouse Beach is one of the better spots for it — the island’s east end is where the currents deposit along the shoreline. Pair that with shade, seating and nothing to carry, and the day plans itself.
It is also a good jumping-off point if you want to extend it. The “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive away, and a handful of good bars sit along Gulf Drive — our Sanibel happy hour guide has them.
About the trip fee. Sanibel carries a $100 per-day trip fee rather than $60, and the difference is the causeway toll each way on top of the usual gas, parking, drive time and crew. That toll is already inside the price you see — nothing extra is added at checkout.
