The Sanibel Causeway is open, the beaches are open, and the island has been back for a while now. What people still ask us is more practical: what does the crossing cost, and why is a Sanibel cabana day priced above the mainland? Here is the straight answer.
The causeway is open
The Sanibel Causeway — the only road link to Sanibel and Captiva — was fully restored after Hurricane Ian, rebuilt with deep sheet piles and granite armour stone to stand up better to the next storm. The Causeway Islands Park beaches alongside it reopened as well, and they remain a free overflow option with restrooms on site, though no shower.
Access to the island is normal. Shelling, the lighthouse, the refuge, the beaches — all of it is back.
The toll, and why Sanibel costs more
The causeway charges a toll each way. That is the single reason a Sanibel setup carries a $100 per-day trip fee rather than the $60 that applies at Fort Myers Beach and Naples: the toll sits on top of the usual gas, parking, drive time and crew.
The important part is that the toll is already inside the price you see. A Solo Cabana at Sanibel is $275, and that figure already contains the trip fee, the toll, delivery, setup and cleanup. You never pay a trip fee on top of a package, and nothing is added at checkout.
Beach parking is the exception. It is never included, at any beach. Sanibel’s beach lots run $5 per hour and are paid to the City of Sanibel, not to us.
Where we set up on the island
Our Sanibel setups run at the island’s main beach accesses:
- Lighthouse Beach — $5 per hour, 4 handicap spaces, restrooms and showers, and an ADA boardwalk straight onto the sand
- Gulfside City Beach Park — $5 per hour, 3 handicap spaces, restrooms and showers
- Bowman’s Beach — $5 per hour, 7 handicap spaces (the most on the island), plus changing rooms, at the cost of a ten-minute walk in
Causeway Islands Park works as free overflow parking when the main lots fill, but the island beaches are where you want to spend the day.
Making the drive worth it
If you are crossing the causeway anyway, it is worth building a full day rather than an afternoon. The “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a natural morning — just not on a Friday, when it is closed — and the Gulf Drive bars close it out at the other end.
